At Explore Learning, we’re proud to see the meaningful progress children make, and the data from this year’s Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) highlights just that. While the national average score was 20.2 out of 25, Explore Learning children achieved an impressive average of 23.2.
Even more striking, 60% of our pupils achieved the highest score of 25, more than double the national figure of 29%.
These results demonstrate that with understanding and purpose and through personalised learning, children can make real, measurable progress with times tables. Our focus isn’t just on helping children achieve high scores, but on building a strong foundation that sets them up for long-term success in maths, their education and beyond.
Understanding the MTC
The Department of Education (DfE) brought in the standardised and statutory check in 2022 to help schools determine if pupils can correctly and effortlessly recall their timetables up to 12x12. The MTC was designed to improve memory of times-table facts, recognise those who need additional support and liberate children’s working memory for more complex maths activities.
The MTC is structured as a five-minute test consisting of 25 questions each worth one mark and covering all the times tables through to 12x12. Children have six seconds to answer each question.
Why children excel with Explore Learning tuition
Our difference lies in our unique approach, tailored to each child. Our smart learning tool, Compass, presents the right question to a child at the right time, building confidence and deepening their understanding. During sessions, children collaborate with one of our expert tutors, who foster a growth mindset, encourage perseverance and instil positive learning habits.
In a recent study we conducted children made on average 19 months of progress in a year. This was based on children completing one hour of tuition per subject a week.
“When it comes to mastering times tables, it’s about more than just memorising answers. We teach children the meaning behind the numbers to give real-world context. It may even be as simple as sharing that 6 x 5 is 6 groups of 5. Understanding both the "what" and the "why" gives children a purpose for learning and helps them see how multiplication is useful in everyday life.” says Lisa Haycox, Executive Director and COO of Explore Learning.
Beyond the scores
These results are not just numbers—they reflect the hard work and growth of each child, some of whom may have begun their journey with gaps in their multiplication knowledge or a lack of confidence in math.
At Explore Learning we unlock the joy of learning as children become fearless in their approach to education, with all the confidence, resilience and curiosity they need in this rapidly changing world.
