What career might your child pursue in 2045?
Ever wondered what kind of careers your child may be pursuing in the future?
With the career landscape forecast to be shaped by rapid technological growth and environmental challenges, children growing up today could be working in fields that are just emerging or haven't been invented yet. We have a look at 6 potential careers that your child might do in 20 years’ time and think about ways that they can prepare for them.
6 careers that we may see in 2045
1. Artificial Intelligence Specialists
As AI becomes increasingly embedded in daily life, we will need experts who can manage them. People working in these roles will create, manage and improve AI systems. They’ll need to love working systematically and handling lots of data and statistics. They’ll also need to provide an ethical overview and solve complex problems to ensure that systems serve everyone fairly.
2. Climate Change Specialists
Climate challenges are expected to be even more urgent in 2045, needing innovative responses and adaptations. With a strong focus on sustainable solutions, people in this sector might work on infrastructure, agriculture and energy projects to help communities adapt to climate change.
3. Space Tourism
It’s not beyond the realms of imagination that there may be a new form of tourism in 2045. With advancements in space technology, more people might be able to travel beyond Earth, creating a demand for people to lead these journeys. Perhaps your child will be an adventurous space tour guide leading groups to destinations beyond Earth, educating travellers on cosmic landmarks and ensuring their safety.
4. Digital Wellness Counsellors
Demand for counselling is predicted to grow and support for digital well-being will be critical as digital life and virtual reality become more immersive. Counsellors will help people manage the mental and emotional impacts of constant digital interaction, perhaps they will also coach people on how to adopt healthy digital habits.
5. Memory Surgeons
With neuroscience and brain-computer interfaces (a system that allows a person to control a device using their brain signals) advancing, these fields could help treat brain injuries, memory loss and expand human cognition. Memory surgeons may help treat or enhance memory, while brain-computer interface therapists could help people learn how to use devices that connect directly to their brains.
6. Cybersecurity
Already a growing area of security services, it’s expected that cyber threats will continue to evolve. We will need skilled cybersecurity experts who specialise in protecting data and systems from cyber threats, especially in a world where personal and national security are digitally interconnected. This type of career will suit people who are highly organised with a strong-eye for detail.
How can you prepare your child for the jobs of the future?
Your child's interests today can give an insight into what career might suit them in twenty years time. For example:
Do they love facts and information? Perhaps a career in artificial intelligence management will be of interest to them.
Are they adventurous and willing to try new things? Will they forge a way in space tourism?
Are they organised and calm? A job within cybersecurity could be for them.
Do they get along with everyone and love helping people? Counselling in digital wellness could be a career path they pursue.
In a recent survey of Explore Learning members, the majority (36%) identified working with people as a key motivator. It’s exciting that whilst the future landscape looks set to be dominated by technological interactions, our future generations still take great pleasure in human connections.
At Explore Learning, we believe that our future advantage lies in the areas that AI can’t replicate - the human edge. We are focused on working alongside technology and enhancing it with skills that are uniquely human such as emotional intelligence, communication, ethical judgement and adaptability.
Teaching resilience, problem-solving and empathy will be invaluable in preparing children for their future careers. The good news is that these are skills we can support our children to develop now. Explore Learning tutors support children to instil these learning habits each week. We believe it’s most effective to cultivate a growth mindset. We teach children the value of feedback and learning from mistakes, we praise the effort over innate ability, encourage children to ask questions and set themselves challenges, and remind children that if they are struggling with a new concept it’s just because they don’t know it YET!
